Film Locations. Georgia is a country known for its beautiful mountains, coastal looks and ancient Orthodox churches. Locations of interest to filmmakers and photographers include:

Caucasus Mountains. Mountaintop churches, unique villages and ski resorts. Specific locations of interest include Gergeti Trinity Church, Ateni Sioni Church, Uplistsikhe, Davit Gareja, Vardzia Cave City, Shatili mountain village, and Kakheti wineries. The Georgian Military Highway offers some spectacular roads ideal for car commercials.

National Parks including Borjami-Kharagauli, Lagodechi, Vashlovani and Tusheti.

Black Sea beaches and coastal towns.

Tbilisi is the capital and main entry point by air. Tbilisi locations of interest include the Old Tbilisi quarter, Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, Holy Trinity Cathedral, Sioni Cathedral, Narikala Fortress, Soviet apartment blocks, Bank of Georgia headquarters built in the post-constructivist style, and a new subway and airport available for filming.

Films shot in Georgia include The Clown, Tangerines and Tbilisi, I Love You.

Georgia Film Location Permits. Georgia is open for business. Most public locations are possible to film in. Tbilisi does not require any city-wide permit for b-roll filming. More complicated shoots requiring street closures or large setups can usually be permitted within 3 days. The police department assists with traffic control. Permits for filming ancient churches and monasteries are possible but require more lead time. Please contact us for location specific information.

When to shoot? Georgia generally has hot summers and mild winters with snow common in mountain areas. The semi-arid southeast and mountain regions have distinct microclimates. The best months to film for weather are May, June and September with long shooting days and none of the excessive heat and humidity of July and August. For monthly weather statistics please see here.

Public holidays may affect timing, availability and costs. See here for public holiday dates in Georgia.

Costs. Georgian locations, local talent and supporting crew are inexpensive. Depending on the shoot, some specialised gear and crew may need to be brought in from abroad. If running a project through a local service company, the 20% income tax and a 18% VAT applies. Our Georgian fixer / service producer will negotiate local deals and provide the appropriate level of production support to match every budget.

Talent day rates and buyouts are negotiated on a personal basis. Georgia offers mainly ethnic Georgian talent with other ethnicities from the Caucasus’s also common. All other non-regional talent needs to be cast abroad.

Crews. Georgia has a small pool of directors, videographers and stills photographers. Most key crew are available locally. Specialist crew are best brought in from nearby European production centres.

Contact us if you are looking for a director, DP, photographer, videographer (cameraman / camera operator), camera assistant (focus puller), sound operator, grip, gaffer, stylist, hair and makeup, PA / runner, production driver, or any other film crew for your shoot in Georgia.

Equipment. Georgia has all the standard camera, grip and lighting equipment. More specialised gear can be easily brought in from abroad. Bringing gear into Georgia is an easy process compared to bringing in gear to some of the countries neighbouring Georgia. Please provide us with a full gear list and allow at least 2 weeks for processing.

Art department and set construction is very basic.

Studios and backlots. None exist at present.

Tax Incentives. Georgia offers a 20% tax rebate for film projects exceeding 4 shoot days and $300K local spend. An extra 2 to 5% rebate applies if the country of Georgia is featured in the film and meets the “Cultural Test”.

Post Production. Post abroad.
