Want to know more about shooting in Guinea-Bissau? See below for an introduction to Guinea-Bissau locations, permits, when to shoot, costs, talent, crews, equipment, art department, studios, post facilities, visas and work permits, film friendly hotels, transport, communications and safety advice.

Film Locations. Guinea-Bissau is a small, low-lying West African country. The interior is savanna and the coastline is swampy plain and mangroves. Of particular interest to filmmakers and photographers is the spectacular Bijagos Archipelago, home of the Bijago people. The islands are known for their beautiful beaches and wealth of biodiversity as found in places like Orango Islands National Park. Back on the mainland, Cantanhez Natural Park offers viewing of chimpanzees in the wild. Agricultural looks found in Guinea-Bissau include palm groves and rice plantations. Bissau is the capital. It is a relaxed city where Portuguese colonial looks can be found.

Guinea Bissau Film Location Permits. Most locations are possible given time, money and a good fixer. Please contact us for location specific information.

When to shoot? Guinea-Bissau has a tropical climate. The dry season runs from December to April with hot winds blowing in from the interior. The hot, wet season runs from May to November. Filming on the Bijagos Archipelago is best done between November and February, when the weather is cool and dry, and the landscape is verdant. For monthly weather statistics please see here.

The Guinea-Bissau Carnival takes place in February.

Costs. Locations, local talent and support crew are inexpensive but since little to no filming infrastructure exists all key crew and equipment must be brought in from abroad. Our Bissau-Guinean fixer will negotiate local deals and provide the appropriate level of production support to match every budget.

The West African CFA franc (XOF) is the official currency.

Talent day rates are very reasonable and buyouts are negotiated on a personal basis. Guinea-Bissau offers mainly African looking talent of the Fula, Mandinka, Balanta, Papel, Manjaco and Mancanha speaking peoples. Some mixed African-Portuguese looks are also available. All other talent needs to be brought in from abroad.

Crews. Guinea-Bissau has a very small local pool of directors, videographers and stills photographers. Key crew must be brought in from abroad.
