Film Locations. Detroit, the city that gave birth to the American automobile industry and Motown music, is the largest city in Michigan. The city’s skyline is home to a variety of impressive architectural styles. Structures of particular interest include the GM Renaissance Center, Penobscot Building, Cadillac Place, Detroit Athletic Club, Hart Plaza, David Stott Building, Wayne County Courthouse, Guardian Building, Frank Murphy Hall of Justice, Fisher Theater and Building, Old Detroit Free Press Building, Book Tower, Ambassador Bridge, and several large sport stadiums. Post-industrialism and economic decline has left entire neighborhoods abandoned and many buildings derelict. Architectural ruins of interest include Michigan Central Station, Harbor Terminal Building, Packard Plant, Old Michigan Theater, several abandoned skyscrapers, and the dilapidated mansions of Brush Park. Detroit’s recent rejuvenation is seeing urban farms and trendy neighborhoods popping up.

Michigan Film Location Permits. Permits are required for filming on federal, state and tribal property. Special permits are required for highways, national parks and historical sites. When to shoot? Southern and central Michigan has a warmer climate with hot summers and cold winters. Northern Michigan has a more severe climate with warm, short summers and long very cold, snowy winters.
