Want to know more about shooting in St Martin? See below for an introduction to St Martin locations, permits, when to shoot, costs, talent, crews, equipment, art department, studios, post facilities, visas and work permits, film friendly hotels, transport, communications and safety advice.
Film Locations. St Martin is partitioned between the French north and Dutch south of the island. Perhaps the island’s most famous location is Princess Juliana International Airport where large passenger planes fly very low over Maho Beach to land on the short landing strip. Other locations of interest to filmmakers and photographers include white sand beaches, azure seas, dry forest, cruise ships and colonial architecture.
St Martin Film Location Permits. Permitting in St Martin is a very straightforward process requiring usually no more than one week for permits. Please contact us for location specific information.
When to shoot? St Martin has a hot, tropical climate tempered by trade winds throughout the year. The driest period is from December to May. This is the best time to film for weather. The wetter period is from June to November which is also the hurricane season. For monthly weather statistics please see here.
Annual boating events such as the Regatta held in March and the Alliance Race are held in November, attracting filmmakers and photographers from around the world. Carnival celebrations take place through April / May.
Costs. Local costs are fairly expensive. The French side of the island trades in the Euro and the Dutch side trades in the Guilder. USD are also accepted. Since little to no filming infrastructure exists all key crew and equipment must be brought in from abroad. Our St Martiner fixer will negotiate local deals and provide the appropriate level of production support to match every budget.
Talent day rates and buyouts are negotiable. Most citizens are Afro-Caribbean with some Caucasian looks also available. All other talent looks need to be brought in from abroad.
Crews. St Martin has a very small pool of directors, videographers and stills photographers. Key crew needs to be brought in. Miami is the closest major production centre should you need to look further.
Contact us if you are looking for a director, DP, photographer, videographer (cameraman / camera operator), camera assistant (focus puller), sound operator, grip, gaffer, stylist, hair and makeup, PA / runner, production driver, or any other film crew for your shoot in St Martin.
