Colorado Film Locations

Colorado is a beautiful state known for its mountain ranges, national parks, great plains, ancient ruins, vibrant cities and luxury ski resorts.

Denver, the Mile-High city, offers a spectacular highrise skyline with a mountain backdrop. Locations of particular interest include the LoDo neighbourhood, State Capitol building, Denver Art Museum, Union Station, Denver Public Library, City and County Building, Colorado Convention Center, Pepsi Center, Red Rocks Amphitheater, sport stadiums, and Denver International Airport. Just outside of Denver you can find the college town of Boulder, known for its trendy vibe, vibrant tech industry, and love of the great outdoors.

The Rocky Mountains National Park offers beautiful snow-capped mountains, forests, glaciers, lakes, rivers, bridges, tunnels and winding roads ideal for car commercials (such as Wolf Creek Pass). Picturesque mountain towns include Salida, Creede, Trinidad, Pueblo, Ouray, Frisco, Manitou Springs, and Crested Butte. Ski resorts of note include Apsen, Vail, Breckenridge, Telluride, Beaver Creek, and Steamboat Springs. All are open to filming.

Telluride is the highest-elevation commercial airport in America. It also features cliffs on both ends of the runway and strong vertical turbulence during winter months.

Other locations of interest to filmmakers and photographers include Great Sand Dunes National Park (tallest sand dunes in North America), Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, Colorado National Monument, Glenwood Canyon and Glenwood Hot Springs, Dinosaur National Monument, Rattlesnake Canyon, Grand Mesa National Forest. Morgan County arid high plains, ruins of the Cliff Palace, Grand Lake, Eldorado Canyon, Collegiate Peaks, Colorado River, Bridal Veil Falls, and Hanging Lake. Cheyenne Mountain Complex is a secured facility located in Colorado Springs. ADX-Florence Supermax Facility is a maximum security prison that holds some of America’s most notorious prisoners including  terrorists, organised crime figures and other high profile criminals. Crystal Mill is a spectacular film location.

Farming towns of interest include Pritchett and Granada. Colorado has plenty of cattle ranches as well as apple orchards, corn and wheat fields. Cannabis production is also a major industry in Colorado.

Historic mining towns of interest include Bonanza, St Elmo, Victor, Cripple Creek, and Animas Forks.

Old West towns include Saguache and South Park City Museum.

Colorado has hosted productions including Indiana Jones and the The Prestige (2006), Dumb and Dumber (1994), Cliffhanger (1993), Last Crusade (1989), Badlands (1973), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), True Grit (1969), as well as a long list of beer and car commercials.

Colorado Film Location Permits

The permitting process varies depending upon what part of the state you are shooting in and the type of permit you require. In general, permitting is a quick, easy and inexpensive process. Proof of insurance is required. Please contact us for location specific information.

When To Shoot?

Denver has one of the highest number of annual sunshine hours of any city in the United States. Spring is mild with warm days. Summer is hot and dry and can last right into November. Autumn brings bright fall colors. Winter is cold, sunny and crisp.

The eastern plains are hot and rainy during the warmer months, and dry and cold during the winter months. This part of the state is subject to tornadoes.

West of the plains, the climate varies significantly. Valleys have a semi-arid climate and mountains have an alpine climate. Winter is the wettest season and summer is the driest. The mountains have mild summers and snowy winters. Fall comes early in mountain areas, bringing beautiful foliage colors.

Desert wildflowers bloom in the Colorado Plateau usually around April.

The Leadville Race Series takes place in August.

Colorado Tax Incentives For Filming

Colorado offers qualifying productions a cash rebate of up to 20%. The incentive applies to commercials, features and TV shows. An out-of-state production company must have at least $1 million in qualifying local spend. TV commercials and video game productions must have qualifying local spend of at least $250,000.

Talent. The state’s population is predominately Caucasian and Latino. Movie character stereotypes include outdoor characters like skiers and rock climbers, young trendy tech types, cattle ranchers, and storm watchers.

Colorado Film Equipment

Equipment. Colorado has all of the standard camera, grip and lighting equipment available for hire.

Communications. Communication is key. Our agility and global experience allows us to customise the right communications systems for every shoot.

Web posted casting, scouting, and videoconferencing.

For clients that are unable to attend set we offer a virtual video village solution. This dedicated and secure high-resolution video streaming platform allows clients from one or multiple timezones to view setups without compromise and to participate in real-time with the team on set. Separate systems can be set up for the discrete conversations that are required to make a job run right. Working remotely with our local teams reduces your content production costs, turnaround times, carbon footprint, and risks associated with unpredictable global events.
