New Mexico Film Locations
New Mexico is known for its spectacular Western landscapes of deserts, monuments, mountains, plains and forests. Natural locations of particular interest include White Sands National Monument, Rio Grande River, Box Canyon, Shiprock Mountain, Flat Top Rock, Bisti Badlands, Florida Mountains, Bandelier National Monument, Sierra Blanca Peak, Todilto Bowl Canyon and Venus Needle, Organ Mountains, Carlsbad Caverns, Bosque del Apache, tribal lands and cattle ranches.
New Mexico’s capital, Santa Fe is renowned for its Adobe architecture and large creative community. There are also several Western sets just outside of Santa Fe available for filming including Bonanza Creek Movie Ranch, Cerro Pelon Ranch (Silverado Movie Town), and Eaves Movie Ranch. “Old Main” New Mexico State Penitentiary is also available for filming.
Taos Pueblo and Acoma Pueblo are historic Native American villages available for commercial filming.
Los Alamos was home to the Manhattan Project.
Spaceport America is the world’s first purpose-built commercial spaceport.
The Lightning Field is an artwork of 400 stainless steel poles by sculptor Walter De Maria.
New Mexico also has a selection of ski resorts from Albuquerque stretching north to Taos.
New Mexico also offers Route 66 looks with infinity roads cutting through vast arid landscapes, old motels and diners, and small town America looks as found in places like Las Vegas, Gallup and Tucumcari.
Albuquerque is New Mexico’s largest city. Sitting in the high desert of central New Mexico, its modern city skyline contrasts with its Old Town looks. Breaking Bad filmed in the Albuquerque suburbs. Other locations of interest in the city include its highway overpasses, modern mansions, desert golf courses, and Cliff’s Amusement Park.
New Mexico has hosted many well known feature films…
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade was filmed on The Cumbres Toltec Railroad.
No Country for Old Men and Hell or Highwater both doubled New Mexico for West Texas. Lone Survivor doubled New Mexico for Afghanistan.
Very Large Array (VLA) satellite dishes feature in the movie Contact.
Terminator Salvation was partly filmed at the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge.
Roswell is not only known for its UFO sites but is home to New Mexico Military Institute where The Men Who Stare at Goats was filmed.
Other productions of note that filmed in New Mexico include True Grit, Wyatt Earp, City Slickers, and Young Guns.
New Mexico Film Location Permits
