South Africa Film Locations

South Africa has long been a popular film destination, particularly for European productions looking for opposite season looks in a similar timezone.

South Africa’s vast variety of unique and international location looks has long attracted productions from all over the world. Of particular note are South Africa’s diversity of cityscapes and neighbourhoods, modern villas with expansive vistas, sports stadiums, beautiful beaches, national parks, savannah, mountains, rivers, forests, a variety of roads ideal for car commercials.

Agricultural film locations include fields of sugarcane, corn, grapes, oranges, pears, potatoes, wheat, sunflowers, apples, tomatoes, lemons, grapefruits, bananas, barley, avocados, pineapples, peaches, and tangerines, to name a few. South Africa is famous for its vineyards. Fishing boats are available for filming. South Africa mines gold, diamonds, chromium, manganese, platinum, vanadium, vermiculite, ilmenite, palladium, rutile, zirconium, uranium, coal, and iron ore. The country’s factories produce electronics, machinery, and motor vehicles. Energy locations include coal-fired power plants, hydroelectric dams, and nuclear plants.

Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban are the main production centres.

South Africa is the most established production service centre in Africa and as such is a resource to much of the rest of the continent in terms of specialised crews and equipment.

Long used to double for other African countries, South Africa has also been used to double for locations as diverse as Washington DC, Kabul, and Las Vegas.

South African locations of interest to visiting filmmakers and photographers can be divided into the following provinces:

Gauteng

Gauteng province is located in the northeast of the country. It is the smallest and most populated province. Gauteng is known for Pretoria, and Johannesburg.

Pretoria is the executive capital of South Africa. The city is famous for its thousands of jacaranda trees. The Union Buildings are the seat of the South African Government. Voortrekker Monument is an impressive structure. University of Pretoria buildings of note include the Old Arts Building, Administration Building, and Faculty of Humanities building. Other film locations include National Zoological Garden of South Africa, Pretoria National Botanic Garden, Freedom Park, and Odi Stadium.

Johannesburg is the largest city, and the main entry point into South Africa. Known for its  high rise Central Business District, Johannesburg is the economic capital. Johannesburg film locations include the following:

Buildings of note include Johannesburg City Hall, Johannesburg City Library, Constitutional Court of South Africa, Johannesburg Park Railway Station, Sentech Tower, Hillbrow Tower, Carlton Centre, and Ponte City Tower which featured in District 9 (2009).

Museums of note include Constitution Hill, Apartheid Museum, Johannesburg Art Gallery, MuseuMAfricA, South African National Museum of Military History, Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre, and James Hall Transport Museum.

Parks of note include Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden, and Johannesburg Botanical Garden.

Stadiums of note include FNB Stadium, Ellis Park Stadium, and Wanderers Stadium.

OR Tambo International Airport is available for filming.

Wits University buildings of note include Wits Great Hall, Wits Art Museum, William Cullen Library, and Johannesburg Planetarium.

Gold Reef City is an amusement park.

Palazzo Steyn, located in Midrand, has a unique aqueduct waterfall feature.

Montecasino is a casino complex.

Soweto Township is a dense urban area known for Mandela House, and Hector Pieterson Memorial. Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom (2013)and Malcolm X (1992) filmed in Soweto.

Cradle of Humankind is a paleoanthropological site known for its hominin fossils.

Dinokeng Game Reserve is home to lions, leopards, elephants, cape buffalos, rhinos, cheetahs, hippos, giraffes, zebras, hyenas, crocodiles, wildebeests, red hartebeests, antelopes, and a diversity of birdlife.

Western Cape

Western Cape province is located in the southwest of the country. The province is known for its beautiful Indian and Atlantic Ocean coastal locations, national parks, vineyards, and the city of Cape Town.

Nestled between the Atlantic Ocean and Table Mountain, Cape Town is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Cape Town offers vast variety of film locations within an hour drive from the city centre including its Central Business District, modern and old-world locations, unique neighbourhoods, museums, promenade, parks, beaches, cliffs, and ocean.

Cape Town’s magnificent coastline and status as one of the windiest city on earth, makes it a destination for ocean-bound shoots. Tall ships, fishing boats, and a range of other seafaring vessels are available for filming.

Surf beaches of note include Dungeons Beach, Elands Bay, Long Beach, Muizenberg Beach, and Victoria Bay.

Cape Town beaches of note include Clifton Beaches, Bakoven Beach and Llandudno Beach. Boulders Beach has penguins. Muizenberg has colourful Victorian bathing houses lining the beach. Camps Bay has many beautiful mansions.

Macassar Beach Pavilion is an abandoned water park overtaken by beach dunes.

Cape Town is South Africa’s legislative capital. The Houses of Parliament are located in Cape Town.

Cape Town City Hall is a large Edwardian building.

Castle of Good Hope is a colonial era structure.

Cape Town Museums of note include Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, District Six Museum, and Iziko South African Museum.

Robben Island is another location of note in Cape Town.

Victoria & Alfred Waterfront is world renowned.

Bo Kaap is a neighbourhood known for its brightly coloured homes and cobble stoned streets.

Lion’s Head is a mountain in Cape Town.

The Cape of Good Hope is a beautiful natural location.

Chapman’s Peak Drive is one of the world’s most beautiful coastal roads.

Cape Town parks of note include Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, and Company’s Garden.

Cheetah Outreach is a nature preserve.

World of Birds Wildlife Sanctuary and Monkey Park.

Sporting venues include Cape Town Stadium, Newlands Stadium, and Kenilworth Racecourse.

The Port of Cape Town is a large container port with ship repair facilities.

Pollsmoor Prison is located in Cape Town.

Garden Route National Park is known for its coastal locations of high forested mountains, beaches, and spectacular roads ideal for car commercials.

Karoo National Park is home to wildlife including springboks, gemsboks, zebras, red hartebeests, rhinos, elands, kudus, klipspringers, bat-eared foxes, black-backed jackals, ostriches, lions, and a diversity of birdlife.

West Coast National Park is known for its spring wildflower bloom. The Langebaan Lagoon is known for its beautiful white sand beaches and turquoise waters. Wildlife of note includes elands, red hartebeests, bonteboks, kudus, gemsboks, steenboks, zebras, duikers, bat-eared foxes, caracals, Cape grey mongooses, ostriches, and a diversity of birdlife.

Birds of Eden is the world’s largest free flight aviary and bird sanctuary.

Knysna Elephant Park is known for its elephants.

Gansbaai is known for its great white shark cage diving.

Bloukrans Bridge is a spectacular film location.

Swartberg Pass is a rugged mountain road great for filming car commercials.

Cango Caves is the largest cave system in Africa.

Bosjes Chapel is a contemporary structure in Ceres.

Swartberg House is a beautiful modern home near Prince Albert.

Koeberg Nuclear Power Station is located in the Western Cape.

Eastern Cape

Eastern Cape province is located in the southeast of the country. The region is known for its spectacular coastline and national parks.

Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) is home to City Hall, Main Public Library, Donkin Reserve, Fort Frederick, Pearson Conservatory, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Museum, South African Air Force Museum, Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, St George’s Park Cricket Ground, Port Elizabeth Railway Station, and Port Elizabeth Container Port. Beaches of note include King’s Beach, Wells Estate Beach, Humewood Beach, Hobie Beach, Pollock Beach, and Sardinia Bay.

Eastern Cape surf beaches of note include East London, Jeffreys Bay, Cape St. Francis, and Coffee Bay.

Seal Point Lighthouse is located in Cape St Francis.

Addo Elephant National Park is home to hundreds of elephants, buffaloes, rhinos, lions, hyenas, as well as the flightless dung beetle.

Tsitsikamma National Park is known for its scenic coastal locations. Gaia (2021) filmed in Tsitsikamma National Park.

Camdeboo National Park is known for its dolerite columns overlooking the vast Karoo plains.

Mountain Zebra National Park is home to the Cape Mountain zebra, caracals, buffalos, rhinos, elands, black wildebeests, red hartebeests, gemsboks, grey rheboks, and a diversity of birdlife.

Kragga Kamma Game Park is home to wildlife including rhinos, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, nyalas, bonteboks, lechwes, and buffalos.

Tiffindell Ski Resort is South Africa’s only ski resort.

Gariep Dam is located in Eastern Cape.

Northern Cape

Northern Cape province is located in the northwest of the country. It is the largest province.

The Northern Cape is famous for its diamond mines including Baken mine, Finsch Mine, and Kimberley Mine. Okiep is a small mining town that doubled for Ethiopia in the opening scene of Uncut Gems (2019).

Tswalu Kalahari Reserve is home to wildlife including lions, cheetahs, rhinos, hyenas, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, giraffes, oryxes, jackals, buffalos, wildebeests, zebras, warthogs, pangolins, aardvarks, ostriches, and a diversity of birdlife.

Augrabies Falls National Park is know for Augrabies Falls, Moon Rock, and wildlife including springboks, rhinos, jackals, caracals, bat-eared foxes, and African wildcats.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, located in the Kalahari Desert, is home to lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, meerkats, wildebeests, springboks, elands, red hartebeests, and a diversity of birdlife.

Mokala National Park is home to wildlife including rhinos, buffalos, antelopes, mountain reedbucks, giraffes, gemsboks, elands, zebras, red hartebeests, blue wildebeests, black wildebeests, kudus, ostriches, steenboks, duikers, and springboks.

ǀAi-ǀAis/Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is known for its valleys, high mountains, and the Nama people which call the area home.

Namaqua National Park has one of the world’s highest concentration of succulent plants. Thousands of wildflowers bloom in the spring. The speckled padloper, the smallest tortoise in the world, can be found in the park. Other wildlife of note include leopards, caracals, springbucks, porcupines, baboons, and jackals.

Tankwa Karoo National Park is home to wildlife including leopards, jackals, steenboks, gemsboks, klipspringers, antelopes, Cape mountain zebra, grey rheboks, kudus, springboks, elands, porcupines, and a diversity of birdlife.

The South African Astronomical Observatory, located in Sutherland, includes several telescopes including the Southern African Large Telescope, and MeerKAT Telescope.

Vanderkloof Dam is located in Northern Cape.

Free State

Free State province is located in the centre of the country. The province is a major agricultural area and the heartland of the white Afrikaner population. Crops are as diverse as cherry orchards, to asparagus farms, to wheat fields.

Bloemfontein is the judicial capital of South Africa. Film locations include the Supreme Court of Appeal, Naval Hill Planetarium, National Afrikaans Literary Museum and Research Centre, Oliewenhuis Art Museum, Free State Stadium, and Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Vredefort crater is the largest impact crater on earth.

Golden Gate Highlands National Park is known for its sandstone cliffs and San rock paintings.

Phakisa Freeway is a motor racing circuit.

Koffiefontein Mine is a diamond mine.

Dams include Sterkfontein Dam, Vaal Dam, and Bloemhof Dam.

KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal province is located in the east of the country. The province is known for its beaches, waterfalls, mountains, savannah, and wildlife. Sugarcane plantations can be found along the Indian Ocean coast.

Durban film locations include the Memorial Tower Building at the University of Kwazulu Natal, Durban Botanic Gardens, Moses Mabhida Stadium, Kings Park Stadium, and Umhlanga Rocks Lighthouse.

Newcastle is a large industrial city.

Hluhluwe–Imfolozi Park is home to wildlife include elephants, rhinoceros, hippos, giraffes, lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, wild dogs, buffalos, crocodiles, wildebeests, zebra, waterbucks, nyalas, elands, kudus, impalas, duikers, sunis, reedbucks, warthogs, mongooses, baboons, monkeys, tortoises, terrapins, and a diversity of birdlife.

Royal Natal National Park is known for Drakensberg Amphitheatre, and Tugela Falls which is the world’s second highest waterfall.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park protects landscapes including coral reefs, sandy beaches, dune forests, savannahs, and wetlands. Wildlife of note include elephants, leopards, rhinos, hippos, buffalos, whale sharks, and dolphins. Leatherback and loggerhead turtles lay their eggs from November to January in places such as Rocktail Bay and Mabibi.

Howick Falls are a beautiful film location.

Sani Pass is a rugged mountain road.

North Sand Bluff Lighthouse is located in Port Edward.

Pongolapoort Dam is located in KwaZulu-Natal.

North West

North West province in located in the north-central part of the country.

This region is home to some of the world’s richest platinum reserves. The North West is cattle country. You can also find an abundance of corn and sunflower fields.

Madikwe Game Reserve is home to elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, wild dogs, buffalos, giraffes, zebras, warthogs, hyenas, baboons, hippos, impalas, kudus, and a diversity of birdlife.

Pilanesberg National Park is home to lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, leopards, cheetahs, zebras, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles, wild dogs, and a diversity of birdlife.

Sun City is a luxury resort and casino.

Royal Bafokeng Stadium is located in Rustenburg.

Mpumalanga

Mpumalanga province is located in the northeast of the country. The region is known for its many citrus and fruit orchards. Mpumalanga is rich in coal reserves.

Blyde River Canyon Nature Reserve is known for Bourke’s Luck Potholes, The Three Rondavels, and God’s Window.

Timbavati Game Reserve is home to wildlife including lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, leopards, cheetahs, and a diversity of birdlife.

Sabi Sands Game Reserve is home to wildlife including lions, elephants, rhinos, hippos, giraffes, buffalos, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, Cape wild dogs, wildebeests, zebras, and a diversity of birdlife.

Mbombela Stadium is located in Mbombela.

Limpopo

Limpopo province is located in the far northeast of the country. The region is known for its wildlife parks. Limpopo is home to a wide variety of agricultural crops as diverse as sunflowers, cotton, corn, tropical fruit, tea and coffee plantations.

Kruger National Park is one of the largest national parks in the world. Wildlife of note includes rhinos, hippos, elephants, lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas, crocodiles, waterbucks, warthogs, antelopes, impalas, hartebeests, wildebeests, zebras, bushbucks, buffalos, giraffes, greater kudus, and a diversity of birdlife.

Mapungubwe National Park has a landscape of sandstone formations, woodlands, riverine forest and baobab trees. Wildlife includes elephants, hippos, rhinos, lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs, hyenas, hyena, crocodiles, meerkats, elands, blue wildebeests, kudus, zebras, bushbucks, waterbucks, impalas, klipspringers, duikers, steenboks, red hartebeests, oryxes, giraffes, warthogs, aardvarks, baboons, and a diversity of birdlife. Mapungubwe Interpretation Centre is a beautiful building.

Marakele National Park is home to wildlife including elephants, lions, leopards, hyenas, antelopes, sables, kudus, elands, impalas, and waterbucks.

Welgevonden Game Reserve is home to lions, elephants, rhinos, buffalos, leopards, giraffes, sables, gemsboks, antelopes, warthogs, bush pigs, aardvarks, and pangolins.

Kapama Game Reserve is home to elephants, lions, Cape buffalos, rhinos, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, impalas, blue wildebeests, and kudus.

Venetia Diamond Mine is the country’s largest diamond mine.

Peter Mokaba Stadium is located in Polokwane.

Territories

Marion Island and Prince Edward Island are two small uninhabited islands located in the sub-Antarctic Indian Ocean.

South Africa Film Location Permits

South Africa has a film friendly and streamlined permitting process, with a number of privately owned locations as well as those that run through the film office. Citywide permits are available for filming b-roll at public locations. For more complicated shoots that require large setups or shutting down city streets, allow at least 2 weeks for permitting. It’s recommended to shoot downtown streets on a Saturday afternoon or a Sunday. Drone filming is permitted in South Africa. Please contact us for location specific information.

When To Shoot?

South Africa’s climate is generally sunny and pleasant, but there is considerable regional variation. The north-west is very arid, the south is temperate, and the north-east has a more tropical climate. Winters (May to August) are generally mild, particularly in the Western Cape. Most of the rest of the country receives only a brief cold spell, with snow falling on the mountain ranges. The rainiest months in Cape Town are May to August. Johannesburg receives most of its annual rainfall in the summer (November to March) making it a great weather film destination for the winter months. Costs & Tax Incentives

Costs. South Africa is a relatively cost efficient production centre given the rate of exchange of most currencies against the South African Rand. That, along with the established industry and professional infrastructure means South Africa offers great value for money. Our South African service producer / fixer will negotiate local deals and provide the appropriate level of production support to match every budget.

Tax Incentives. South Africa offers a rebate of up to 25% for qualifying productions.

Film Crew & Talent

Crews. South Africa has a good pool of local directors, directors of photography and stills photographers. The majority have local and international experience. There is a great depth of skilled, hard working, dedicated, professional and technical crews. There are a number of DGA accredited ADs based in South Africa. Crews are non-union.

Talent is non-union and although buyouts are worked out on guideline percentages, these are somewhat negotiable.

The official languages of South Africa include English, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Afrikaans, Sepedi, Setswana, Sesotho, Xitsonga, siSwati, Tshivenda, and isiNdebele.

Ethnically most South Africans are Black African. The main minority groups include White Africans, Coloureds, and Asians.

South Africa has a diverse range of people that can fulfil the majority of casting requirements such as character actors, models, and extras. A large number of international models spend the busy summer months in Cape Town. South Africa is also home to a wealth of animal actors ranging from big safari animals through to domestic pets.

Fringes & Premiums. No hidden extras. South Africa works on a 10 hour day with one hour break for lunch. Overtime is charged at time and a half for the next 4 hours and double time after that. Sundays, public holidays, the first night of a night shoot and the seventh consecutive day of filming are charged at time and a half. Gear checks, travel days and technical recces are charged at a half day rate providing they do not exceed 6 hours. Turnaround is 10 hours. Travel time is charged when the location is further than 40 minutes from the city centre. 



South Africa Film Equipment

Equipment. As you would expect to find in any other established film production centre, South Africa has as an extensive range of standard and specialized camera, lighting and grip equipment available locally. Examples of available equipment include: Motion Control, Cineflex, Phantom, Red, and the Freedom Arm (a fully digital gyro-stabilized camera crane). For productions looking to bring in film equipment South Africa is an ATA carnet country.

Communications. Communication is key. Our agility and global experience allows us to customise the right communications systems for every shoot.

Web posted casting, scouting, and videoconferencing.

For clients that are unable to attend set we offer a virtual video village solution. This dedicated and secure high-resolution video streaming platform allows clients from one or multiple timezones to view setups without compromise and to participate in real-time with the team on set. Separate systems can be set up for the discrete conversations that are required to make a job run right. Working remotely with our local teams reduces your content production costs, turnaround times, carbon footprint, and risks associated with unpredictable global events.

Art Department, Studios, Backlots, & Post Production

Art department and set construction is of a very high standard. South African Art Directors have worked with most countries and are flexible and used to the demands of international clients both for commercials and features.

Post Production. South Africa no longer has any labs. South Africa is a well established centre for post and animation with various options for VFX and CGI work.

Visas & Work Permits

Entry is subject to regulations from country of origin. Contact your local South African embassy or representative for more information. Generally speaking visiting crews are divided into an Oversight Group (i.e. client, agency and production company personnel) and the Specialist Group (i.e actors, models, directors, technicians and the art department).

The Oversight Group from visa exempt countries can travel to South Africa without pre-applying at a South African Embassy or Consulate and will be allowed entry by presenting the relevant form, their travel itinerary and a letter from the South African Production Company to the immigration officials at the airport, their passports will then be endorsed with the relevant authorisation.

The ‘Specialist Group’ must still apply, in advance, to their local South African Embassy or Consulate, however, the requirements are streamlined to the relevant form, travel itinerary and the letter from the South African Production Company.

Transport & Accommodation

Transportation Infrastructure. Main roads are up to international standards. Several international airlines service flights to South Africa.

Accommodation. South Africa offers a wide range of accommodation options including luxury hotels, business hotels, boutique hotels, villas, houses on the beach, and serviced apartments. Final Notes

Safety. While South Africa does have a crime problem compared to some countries, most of the crime is isolated to certain areas. The country is far from lawless.
