Filming in Grenada

For an introduction to shooting in Grenada see below notes on film locations, permits, when to shoot, unique local stories, costs, tax incentives, crews, talent, equipment, communications, art department, studios, post facilities, visas and work permits for filming, transport, film-friendly accommodation, and safety advice.

Grenada Film Locations

Grenada is a Caribbean nation located at the southern end of the Grenadines island chain. The country consists of the islands Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique, as well as several smaller islands. Grenada is a mountainous island, known for its lush rainforests, paradise waterfalls, white sand beaches, turquoise waters, rare tropical flowers and fragrant spice trees.

Also known as “Spice Island”, Grenada is a big producer of nutmeg, vanilla, cinnamon, ginger, cocoa and sugarcane.

White Squall (1996) filmed in part in Grenada.

St George’s is the capital. It is a pretty town with whitewashed buildings cascading down toward a horseshoe-shaped harbour. Locations of note include Grenada Port Authority Cruise Ship Terminal, Market Square, Fort George, and National Cricket Stadium.

Grenada’s most beautiful beaches can be found at Grand Anse, Levera Bay and Morne Rouge Bay.

Paradise island waterfall looks include Annandale Falls, Concord Falls and Mount Carmel Waterfall.

Grenada’s coral reefs offer impressive underwater photography. Jason de Caires Taylor’s Underwater Sculpture Park is located in Moliniere Bay.

Grand Etang National Park and Levera National Park are beautiful nature locations.

River Antoine Rum Distillery is also located in Grenada.

Grenada Film Location Permits

Most locations are possible given time, money and the right approach. Please contact us for location specific information.

When To Shoot?

Grenada enjoys a year-round warm, tropical climate. Conditions are humid around the coast but become considerably cooler and wetter toward the mountainous interior. Grenada lies on the edge of the hurricane belt. The wet season runs from June to December when conditions are hot, humid and short bursts of heavy rainfall occur frequently. The dry season, and best time to film for weather, runs from January to May when showers are few and temperatures are cooled by trade winds. For monthly weather statistics please see here.

Events of interest to filmmakers and photographers include:

• The Port Louis Grenada Sailing Festival in January / February, and
• Spice Mas (Grenada Carnival) in August.

Grenada is predominately Christian, so those holidays are observed.

Public holidays may affect timing, availability and costs. See here for public holiday dates in Grenada.

Unique Local Stories

Brands are looking for local stories that match their brand narrative. Our local teams are a great lead for sourcing those unique stories and characters.

If you are looking for stories for your next shoot, send us your brief and we will pitch you ideas.

If you have a unique story you would like to pitch to a brand anywhere in the world, pitch us your idea. We have well-established processes to ensure that your ideas are properly seen and protected.

Costs & Tax Incentives

Costs. Locations, local talent and support crew are inexpensive but since little to no filming infrastructure exists all key crew and equipment must be brought in from abroad. Our Grenadan fixer will negotiate local deals and provide the appropriate level of production support to match every budget.

Tax Incentives. At present there are no tax incentives for foreign commercials or feature films shooting in Grenada.

Film Crew & Talent

Crews. Grenada has a very small pool of directors, videographers and stills photographers. Key crew must be brought in from abroad.

Contact us if you are looking for a director, DP, photographer, videographer (cameraman / camera operator), camera assistant (focus puller), sound operator, grip, gaffer, stylist, hair and makeup, PA / runner, production driver, or any other film crew for your shoot in Grenada.

Talent day rates and and buyouts are negotiable.

English is the official language.

Most citizens are Afro-Caribbean with some East Indian and Caucasian looks also available. All other talent looks need to be brought in from abroad.

Grenada Film Equipment

Equipment. You will need to bring in all camera, grip and lighting equipment from abroad. For productions intending to bring in equipment, Grenada is not an ATA carnet country.

Communication. Internet is widely available.

Communication is key. Our agility and global experience allows us to customise the right communications systems for every shoot.

Web posted casting, scouting, and videoconferencing.

For clients that are unable to attend set we offer a virtual video village solution. This dedicated and secure high-resolution video streaming platform allows clients from one or multiple timezones to view setups without compromise and to participate in real-time with the team on set. Separate systems can be set up for the discrete conversations that are required to make a job run right. Working remotely with our local teams reduces your content production costs, turnaround times, carbon footprint, and risks associated with unpredictable global events.

Art Department, Studios, Backlots, & Post Production

Art department and set construction is very basic.

Studios and backlots. None exist at present.

Post Production. Post abroad.

Visas & Work Permits

Entry is subject to regulations from country of origin. Crews travelling on Western passports can enter visa-free for stays of up to 3 or 6 months. Contact your local Grenadan embassy or representative for more information.

Transport & Accommodation

Transportation Infrastructure. Main roads are in a good condition but they are winding and narrow, making travel times longer than expected. Boats are the best way to travel between islands. Several international airlines service flights to Grenada.

Accommodation. Recommended film friendly hotels in Grenada include:

Petite Anse Hotel
Maca Bana
The Calabash Hotel and Villas

Please contact us for corporate rates.

For longer stays we can also organize serviced apartments.

Final Notes

Safety. See here for up to date travel advice.

Down Time. Sample the flavours of Spice Island.

Projects. For an example of TV commercials, stills campaigns, online content, corporate videos, virtual reality 360 content, feature films, TV series and documentaries shot in Grenada, please see below:
