Abandoned Locations: Kreenholm Textile Factory, Narva, Estonia

Written on May 18, 2018

Kreenholm Textile Factory

Kreenholm Textile Factory is an abandoned 19th century red brick factory complex built in the English style. It is located on an island in the Narva River, the border between Estonia and Russia. A town within a town, the complex once included a factory, a hospital, workers’ barracks, directors’ houses, and Kreenholm Park. The location offers guided tours on Sundays. Kreenholm Textile Factory is also available for film and photography shoots. There is talk of converting Kreenholm into a shopping mall, so global productions ought to consider filming at this unique abandoned location before it’s gone.

As well as being known for the Kreenholm Textile Factory, the city of Narva is also known for the castle of Order of Germanic knights and the Russian fortress of Ivangorod, which sit across the Narva River from each other. The city also has many grey Stalinist buildings if that’s what your shoot is looking for. Even though Narva is in the European Union, most of the population are ethnically Russian.
