Guatemala City
Guatemala City is the capital of Guatemala. It is known for its Mayan history, high-altitude location and nearby volcanoes. The city is arranged into zones:
Zone 1 is the heart of the city. Locations of note include Plaza Mayor, Metropolitan Cathedral, National Theatre, Plaza de la Constitución, National Palace of Culture, and Mercado Central.
Zone 4 is to Guatemala City what Brooklyn is to New York. It is packed with street art, trendy coffee shops, cool bars, and communal working spaces. Torre del Reformador is a mini version of the Eiffel Tower that was built in 1935. Zone 4 is also home to government buildings including the central INGUAT offices and the Supreme Court. Cuatro Grados Norte (Four Degrees North) district is the cultural and gastronomic centre of the city with its many bars, restaurants and colourfully painted walls.
Zones 9 & 10 is the upmarket area known for its tree-lined avenues, embassies, designer stores, and expensive hotels. The area is also home to the botanical gardens, Museo Ixchel del Traje Indígena, and Popol Vuh Museo.
Safety
Although safety has greatly improved in recent years, it remains a major issue in Guatemala City and certain zones remain off-limits (specifically Zone 3, 6, 18, and 21). Of course, if you’re specifically looking to film in dangerous areas, that can also be arranged. Our Guatemalan fixer / producer will arrange the appropriate level of security based on the specifics of your shoot.
Down Time
For the meat-lovers, Hacienda Real is a must.
