Andorra Film Locations
Andorra is a small mountain state located in the eastern Pyrenees mountains between France and Spain. The entire country can be crossed by car in less than 1 hour. It is known for its picturesque mountains, snow skiing in the wintertime and green valleys with bubbling streams in the warmer months.
In terms of agricultural film locations cattle, sheep and goats are raised in the valleys and mountainous areas.
The Realm (2018) filmed in part in Andorra. On the whole, the country has not hosted many international productions. The local film infrastructure is very small. Having to bring in crews from Barcelona or further afield makes it a relatively expensive place to film locations that can be more easily doubled elsewhere.
Film locations can be divided into the following parishes: Andorra la Vella, Canillo, Escaldes-Engordany, La Massana, Ordino, and Sant Julià de Lòria.
Andorra la Vella is the capital. A tiny city, it is easily walkable. Film locations of note include the Casa de la Vall, New Parliament of Andorra, Plaça del Poble, and Sant Esteve Church. Caldea is an extensive spa complex housed in a futuristic mirror-covered building.
Ski resorts of note include Soldeu, Vallnord, and Grandvalira. When the summer comes, the areas become a paradise for hiking and mountain biking.
Nature parks of note include Madriu-Perafita-Claror, Valle de Sorteny, and Valls del Comapedrosa.
Andorra is dotted with many stone Romanesque churches. Of note are Sant Joan de Caselles, Sant Martí de la Cortinada, Sant Esteve, and Santa Coloma.
Despite its small size, Andorra is home to many museums including the Perfume Museum, Tobacco Museum, Miniature Museum, Postal Museum, Automobile Museum, Electricity Museum and a Comic Museum.
Andorra Film Location Permits
Andorra is a film friendly country. There are no unusual rules and regulations. Please contact us for location specific information.
When To Shoot?
November to April are the best months for snow looks. May to September are the warmest months with July to August busy with tourists on summer holidays. For monthly weather statistics please see here.
Events of interest to filmmakers and photographers include:
• International Women’s Clown Festival in May
• Revetlla de Sant Joan in June
• Our Lady of Meitxell Day in September
Andorra is a predominately Christian country so those holidays are observed.
Public holidays may affect timing, availability and costs. See here for public holiday dates.
Unique Local Stories
Brands are looking for local stories that match their brand narrative. Our local teams are a great lead for sourcing those unique stories and characters.
If you are looking for stories for your next shoot, send us your brief and we will pitch you ideas.
If you have a unique story you would like to pitch to a brand anywhere in the world, pitch us your idea. We have well-established processes to ensure that your ideas are properly seen and protected.
Andorra Costs & Tax Incentives For Filming
Costs. Andorra trades in the Euro. It is a small country with little to no film infrastructure so having to bring in all crew and equipment from abroad can add significantly to your costs. Barcelona is the closest major production centre, a 3 hour drive away. Our Andorran fixer / service producer will negotiate local deals and provide the appropriate level of production support to match every budget.
Tax Incentives. At present there are no tax incentives for foreign commercials or feature films shooting in Andorra.
Andorra Film Crew & Talent
Crews. Andorra has a very small pool of local directors, directors of photography and stills photographers. All key crew should be brought in from abroad. Its close proximity to major European production centres allows easy access to those experienced pools of crew.
Contact us if you are looking for a director, DoP / cinematographer, videographer / camera operator, stills photographer, or any other film crew for your shoot in Andorra.
If you are an exceptionally talented Andorran director, DoP / cinematographer, videographer / camera operator, or stills photographer, introduce yourself here.
Talent is non-union and buyouts are negotiable. The local talent pool is very small so it is advised to bring in featured talent from abroad. Andorrans, who are ethnically Catalan, are a minority in their own country; Spaniards, Portuguese, French, Britons, and Italians make up two thirds of the population. All other talent looks can be easily brought in from nearby European production centres.
Andorra Film Equipment
Equipment. Local options are very limited. Best to bring in all camera, grip and lighting equipment from abroad. For productions looking to bring in film equipment Andorra is an ATA carnet country.
Communications. Communication is key. Our agility and global experience allows us to customise the right communications systems for every shoot.
Web posted casting, scouting, and videoconferencing.
For clients that are unable to attend set we offer a virtual video village solution. This dedicated and secure high-resolution video streaming platform allows clients from one or multiple timezones to view setups without compromise and to participate in real-time with the team on set. Separate systems can be set up for the discrete conversations that are required to make a job run right. Working remotely with our local teams reduces your content production costs, turnaround times, carbon footprint, and risks associated with unpredictable global events.
Andorra Art Department, Studios, Backlots, & Post Production
Art department and set construction is very basic.
Studios and backlots. None exist at present.
Post Production. Post abroad.
Andorra Visas & Work Permits For Filming
Andorra is not part of the Schengen Area. However, since the country can only be accessed through France and Spain (both Schengen Area members) their rules will apply. Andorra has border controls with both France and Spain, so make sure if you need a visa to enter the Schengen Area, that you have a multiple-entry visa, so when leaving you will be allowed back into France or Spain. Citizens of EU countries are required to present either national identity cards or passports to enter Andorra, while everyone else needs to present a passport. US passport holders can enter visa-free for stays of up to 90 days. Contact your local Andorran embassy or representative for more information.
Andorra Transport & Accommodation
Transportation Infrastructure is up to expected European standards. Barcelona is the closest major international airport 3 hours drive from Andorra.
Accommodation. Recommended film friendly hotels in Andorra la Vella include:
Hotel Acta Arthotel
Hotel Pyrenees
Please contact us for corporate rates.
For longer stays we can also organize serviced apartments.
Final Notes
Safety. Andorra is a very safe place to shoot. See here for up to date travel advice.
