Filming in Liechtenstein
For an introduction to shooting in Liechtenstein see below notes on film locations, permits, when to shoot, unique local stories, costs, tax incentives, crews, talent, equipment, communications, art department, studios, post facilities, visas and work permits for filming, transport, film-friendly accommodation, and safety advice.
Liechtenstein Film Locations
Liechtenstein is a doubly landlocked country located entirely within the Alps, between the nations of Austria and Switzerland. Film locations of note include mountains, green meadows, forests, rivers, lakes, and medieval castles.
Agricultural film locations include vineyards as well as fields of wheat, barley, corn, potatoes, and dairy cows. High-tech factories produce electronics, textiles, precision instruments, metals, power tools, and pharmaceuticals. Financial services are an important part of the economy.
The Amazing Race 18 (2011) filmed in Liechtenstein.
Given that Liechtenstein is one of the world’s smallest countries, all locations can be reached within a 30 minute drive.
Film locations can be divided into the following municipalities: Ruggell, Schellenberg, Gamprin, Eschen, Mauren, Schaan, Planken, Vaduz, Triesenberg, Triesen, and Balzers.
Vaduz, located on the Rhine River, is the capital. Film locations of note include Vaduz Castle, Schalun Castle ruins, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, Vaduz Square, National Museum, Vaduz Cathedral, Red House, Wine Cellar of the Prince of Liechtenstein, Old Bridge, and the Landtag parliament building.
Schaan is the largest population centre.
Gutenberg Castle is located in Balzers.
Grauspitz is the country’s highest peak.
Malbun is a ski resort.
Liechtenstein Film Location Permits
Liechtenstein has a film friendly and streamlined permitting process. There are no extraordinary restrictions or rules. Please contact us for location specific information.
When To Shoot?
Liechtenstein has a continental Alpine climate. Despite its Alpine location, prevailing southerly winds make the climate of Liechtenstein comparatively mild. Winters (November to March) can experience heavy snowfalls. Spring (April to May) sees mountain wildflowers in full bloom. Summers (June to September) are mild and often cloudy. Fall (October to November) sees leaves changing colour. For monthly weather statistics please see here.
Events of interest to filmmakers and photographers include:
• The Liechtenstein Operettas are a series of classical music events taking place from January through to March.
• The LGT Alpine Marathon in June takes place at an altitude of about 5900 feet.
Liechtenstein is a predominately Christian country, so those holidays are observed.
Public holidays may affect timing, availability and costs. See here for public holiday dates in Liechtenstein.
Unique Local Stories
Brands are looking for local stories that match their brand narrative. Our local teams are a great lead for sourcing those unique stories and characters.
If you are looking for stories for your next shoot, send us your brief and we will pitch you ideas.
If you have a unique story you would like to pitch to a brand anywhere in the world, pitch us your idea. We have well-established processes to ensure that your ideas are properly seen and protected.
Costs & Tax Incentives
Costs. Liechtenstein is a relatively expensive place to shoot. Liechtenstein trades in the Swiss Franc. Our Liechtenstein fixer / service producer will negotiate local deals and provide the appropriate level of production support to match every budget.
Tax Incentives. At present there are no tax incentives for foreign commercials or films shooting in Liechtenstein.
Film Crew & Talent
Crews. Liechtenstein has a very small pool of local directors, videographers and stills photographers. Key crew must be brought in from abroad. Local crews are non-union. Liechtenstein’s close proximity to major European film production centres allows easy access to those crews.
Contact us if you are looking for a director, DP, photographer, videographer (cameraman / camera operator), camera assistant (focus puller), sound operator, grip, gaffer, stylist, hair and makeup, PA / runner, production driver, or any other film crew for your shoot in Liechtenstein.
Talent is non-union and buyouts are negotiable.
German is the official language, and English is also widely spoken.
Liechtenstein has a very small population. Liechtensteiners, a German speaking people, are the ethnic majority. The country also has a significant minority originating from Switzerland, Austria, and Germany. All other talent looks need to be brought in from abroad. The country’s close proximity to major European production centres allow for easy access to those pools of talent.
Liechtenstein Film Equipment
Equipment. Given that Liechtenstein is a small country without a large film infrastructure, locally based camera, grip and lighting equipment options are limited. Best to bring in from abroad. For productions looking to bring in film equipment Liechtenstein is an ATA carnet country.
Communications. Communication is key. Our agility and global experience allows us to customise the right communications systems for every shoot.
Web posted casting, scouting, and videoconferencing.
For clients that are unable to attend set we offer a virtual video village solution. This dedicated and secure high-resolution video streaming platform allows clients from one or multiple timezones to view setups without compromise and to participate in real-time with the team on set. Separate systems can be set up for the discrete conversations that are required to make a job run right. Working remotely with our local teams reduces your content production costs, turnaround times, carbon footprint, and risks associated with unpredictable global events.
Art Department, Studios, Backlots, & Post Production
Art department and set construction. Very little filming goes on in Liechtenstein. Best to bring in art department team from abroad. Set construction is very expensive.
Studios and backlots. None exist at present.
Post Production. Must post abroad.
Visas & Work Permits
Liechtenstein is a Schengen Area member state. Work permits are not required for filming in Liechtenstein. Visiting Western crews can enter Liechtenstein visa-free for stays of up to 90 days. Note, for crew who need visas, Liechtenstein does not issue its own visas. There are no border controls between Switzerland and Liechtenstein. As such, the same visa policies apply for Liechtenstein as they do for Switzerland.
Transport & Accommodation
Transportation Infrastructure. Liechtenstein has no airports. Zurich in Switzerland is the closest major airport a 115 km drive away. There is a heliport. Best to enter by land. Roads are of a high standard.
Accommodation. Recommended film friendly hotels in Vaduz include:
Parkhotel Sonnenhof
Hotel Residence
Please contact us for corporate rates.
For longer stays we can also organize serviced apartments.
Final Notes
Safety. Liechtenstein is a very safe place for foreign productions to visit. See here for up to date travel advice.
Down Time. Try local cuisine such as käsknöpfle mit apfelmus, ribel, tatsch/kratzete, and sura käs.
