New York Film Locations

The third largest state in the union, New York state is best known for one of the world’s great capitals, New York City. Beyond the Five Boroughs you can find a diversity of beautiful film locations including verdant forests, lakes, rivers, waterfalls, wineries, covered bridges, ski hills, beaches, lighthouses, historic sites, mansions, museums, and picturesque hamlets. The Erie Canal runs across the state.

New York has a diverse economy ranging from banking, healthcare, education, tech, and advertising services. Agricultural film locations include dairy farms, maple syrup farms, vineyards, apple orchards, and corn fields. Energy locations include gas fired power plants, nuclear plants, and hydroelectric dams.

New York City

New York City includes the counties (boroughs) of New York (Manhattan), Bronx (The Bronx), Queens (Queens), Kings (Brooklyn), and Richmond (Staten Island).

Manhattan. New York City is one of the world’s most filmed cities. Locations iconic to the city include the famous Manhattan skyline, Statue of Liberty, 5th Avenue, NYC subway, and unique neighbourhoods such as Times Square, Broadway, and Wall Street.

Famous hotels include The Plaza, The Carlyle, The Standard, New York Palace, Algonquin Hotel, Waldorf Astoria, Roosevelt Hotel, New Yorker Hotel, St Regis, Marriott Marquis, Nomad Hotel, and Hotel Chelsea, to name a few.

New York City has thousands of ever changing restaurants. Of note are Trinity Place Bank Vault Bar, Katz’s Deli, and Tom’s Diner.

Entertainment venues of note include the Metropolitan Opera House at the Lincoln Center, Perelman Performing Arts Center, Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall, Apollo Theater, United Palace Theatre, Carnegie Hall, and Javits Center.

The Brooklyn Bridge, Manhattan Bridge, Williamsburg Bridge, Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge, and High Bridge cross the East River. The George Washington Bridge, Holland Tunnel, and Lincoln Tunnel cross the Hudson River.

Abandoned subway stations include City Hall Station, Track 61, and 18th St subway station.

Nearby islands of note include Governors Island, Roosevelt Island, Hart Island, and North Brother Island.

The Cloisters in upper Manhattan offer European medieval architecture.

Brooklyn. Film locations include the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brooklyn Navy Yard, Brooklyn Borough Hall, Brooklyn Tower, Brooklyn Museum, Barclays Center, Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Coney Island, Prospect Park, Brooklyn Bridge Park, Domino Park, Fort Greene Park, McCarren Park, Grand Army Plaza, Kings Theatre, New York Transit Museum, Floyd Bennett Airfield, Green-Wood Cemetery, and Jane’s Carousel. Locations across Williamsburg and Dumbo offer great shots of the Manhattan skyline. Unique Brooklyn neighbourhoods of note include Bushwick, Park Slope, Brooklyn Heights, Greenpoint, and Bed–Stuy. Abandoned locations of interest include the Brooklyn Army Terminal, Jumping Jack Power Plant, Gowanus Batcave, Red Hook Grain Terminal, and Loew’s 46th Street Theatre.

The Bronx. Locations include the Bronx Zoo, New York Botanical Garden, Yankee Stadium, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Wave Hill Public Garden & Cultural Center, Van Cortlandt Park, Pelham Bay Park, Concrete Plant Park, Orchard Beach, Bartow-Pell Mansion, City Island, Throgs Neck Bridge, Hall of Fame for Great Americans, and Rikers Island prison.

Queens. Film locations include MoMA PS1, Museum of the Moving Image, Queens Museum, public housing complexes such as Queensbridge and Marcy Houses, Queens Botanical Garden, Rockaway Beach, Astoria Park, Jacob Riis Park, Hunter’s Point South Park, Ganesh Temple, Fort Totten Officers’ Club, Koscuiuszko Bridge, Laguardia Airport, and JFK International Airport including the TWA building designed by Eero Saarinen. Flushing Meadows is home to the US Open tennis grand slam. Citi Field baseball stadium is home to the New York Mets.

Staten Island. Locations include Snug Harbor, St George Theatre, Historic Richmond Town, Staten Island Borough Hall, Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island Ferry, Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, Goethals Bridge, Great Kills Park, September 11th Memorial, Staten Island boat graveyard, and New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden.

Long Island

Long Island includes the counties of Nassau, and Suffolk.

Nassau. Film locations of note include Old Westbury Gardens, Sagamore Hill, Jones Beach State Park, Eisenhower Park, Belmont Park horse racing track, Cradle of Aviation Museum, Nassau County Firefighters Museum, and Museum of American Armor. Sands Point Preserve is known for Hempstead House, Castle Gould, and Falaise Museum. Stepping Stones Lighthouse is a Victorian-style lighthouse.

Suffolk. The Hamptons communities of Montauk, East Hampton, Southampton, Water Mill, Bridgehampton, Sagaponack, Amagansett, and Sag Harbour are famous for their beach front mansions. Oheka Castle is located in Huntington. Vanderbilt Museum is located in Centerport. Robert Moses State Park is known for its miles of beaches, Fire Island Lighthouse, and nearby beachside communities such as Kismet, Saltaire, Ocean Beach, and Point O’ Woods. Further along, Fire Island is also home to the LGBTQ+ communities of Cherry Grove and The Pines.

Hudson Valley

The Hudson Valley includes the counties of Sullivan, Ulster, Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester.

Sullivan. Locations include the Kadampa Meditation Center, Blue Cliff Monastery, St Nektarios Monastery, Beaverkill Covered Bridge, Halls Mills Covered Bridge, Livingston Manor Covered Bridge, Tusten Stone Arch Bridge, and the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River. Callicoon is a pretty hamlet in the Catskill Mountains.

Ulster. Film locations include Mohonk Mountain House, Minnewaska State Park, Belleayre ski resort, New Paltz, Soyuzivka Heritage Center, Karma Triyana Dharmachakra Tibetan Buddhist monastery, Woodstock, Opus 40 sculpture park, Kingston-Rhinecliff Bridge, Rosendale Trestle, Hudson River Maritime Museum, Saugerties Lighthouse, Esopus Meadows Lighthouse, Rondout Lighthouse. The Shawangunk Mountains are a popular area for rock climbing.

Dutchess. Locations include Poughkeepsie, Dia Beacon, Vanderbilt Mansion, Home of Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site, Bannerman’s Castle on Pollepel Island, Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome, Wilderstein Historic Site, Staatsburgh State Historic Site, Akin Free Library, and Village Diner which is a classic diner located in Red Hook. Bard College is known for Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts designed by Frank Gehry, Ward Manor House, Warden’s Hall, Blithewood Manor, and Hoffman Library.

Orange. Film locations include Storm King Art Center, Mount Peter Ski Area, West Point Military Academy, New York Renaissance Faire, and the Harness Racing Museum & Hall Of Fame.

Putnam. Locations include Boscobel House and Gardens, Thunder Ridge Ski Area, and Hudson Highlands State Park.

Rockland. Film locations include Tappan Zee Bridge, Bear Mountain State Park, Rockland Lake State Park, Hook Mountain State Park, Nyack Beach State Park, Tallman Mountain State Park, Stony Point Battlefield, and Novo-Diveyevo Russian Orthodox Convent. Rockland Children’s Psychiatric Center, located in Orangeburg, was filmed for Orange Is the New Black (2013-2019).

Westchester. Locations include Playland Park, Lyndhurst Mansion, Philipsburg Manor, Rockefeller State Park Preserve, Thomas J. Watson Research Center, New Croton Reservoir, Kensico Dam Plaza, Untermyer Park and Gardens, Van Cortlandt Manor, Lenoir Preserve, Armour-Stiner Octagon House, Rye Playland Beach, Execution Rocks Lighthouse, Sleepy Hollow Lighthouse, and Yonkers Raceway. Indian Point is a retired nuclear power plant located in Buchanan. Rye was filmed for The Watcher (2022), Boardwalk Empire (2010-2014), and Big (1988). Chappaqua was filmed for Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022).

Capital District

Capital District includes the counties of Albany, Columbia, Greene, Warren, Washington, Saratoga, Schenectady, and Rensselaer.

Albany. Albany is the state’s capital. Film locations include the New York state capitol building, New York State Museum, The Egg Performance Center, Empire State Plaza, Albany City Hall, New York State Executive Mansion, Palace Theatre, New York State Education Building, Albany Institute of History & Art, SUNY Plaza, Washington Park, USS Slater, and John Boyd Thacher State Park.

Columbia. Film locations include Olana State Historic Site, Lake Taghkanic State Park, and FASNY Museum of Firefighting.

Greene. Locations include Hunter Mountain Resort, Windham Mountain Resort, Kaaterskill Falls, and Hudson-Athens Lighthouse.

Warren. Film locations include Fort William Henry Museum, Sagamore Resort, and Gore Mountain ski resort.

Washington. Locations include Willard Mountain ski resort, Rexleigh Covered Bridge, Eagleville Covered Bridge, and Shushan Covered Bridge.

Saratoga. Film locations include Saratoga Racetrack, Saratoga Automobile Museum, Saratoga Spa State Park, Saratoga National Historical Park, Moreau Lake State Park, and New York State Military Museum.

Schenectady. Locations include Maple Ski Ridge, Empire State Aerosciences Museum, Proctor’s Theatre, and the Nott Memorial at Union College.

Rensselaer. Film locations include Grafton Lakes State Park, Burden Iron Works Museum, Barberville Falls, Grafton Peace Pagoda, and Buskirks Covered Bridge.

Mohawk Valley

The Mohawk Valley includes the counties of Oneida, Herkimer, Fulton, Montgomery, Otsego, and Schoharie.

Oneida. Locations include Minocqua Winter Park, lakes and forest landscapes.

Herkimer. Film locations include Herkimer Diamond Mines KOA Resort, Holy Trinity Russian Orthodox Monastery, Bald Mountain, and Erie Canal Lock 17.

Fulton. Locations include Royal Mountain Ski Area, Johnson Hall State Historic Site, and Fulton County Museum.

Montgomery. Film locations include Arkell Museum, Our Lady of Martyrs Shrine, and Saint Kateri National Shrine and Historic Site.

Otsego. Cooperstown is known for the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, Fenimore Art Museum, Farmers’ Museum, and Cooperstown and Charlotte Valley Railroad.

Schoharie. Locations include Howe Caverns, Iroquois Indian Museum, Mine Kill State Park, Blenheim Covered Bridge, Fox Creek Bridge, and Night Terrors Haunted Farm.

North Country

North Country includes the counties of St Lawrence, Lewis, Jefferson, Hamilton, Essex, Clinton, and Franklin.

St Lawrence. Singer Castle is located in the Thousand Islands region. Other film locations include Frederic Remington Art Museum, Bog River Falls, Robert Moses State Park, Higley Flow State Park, Jacques Cartier State Park, and Ogdensburg-Prescott International Bridge.

Lewis. Locations include Snow Ridge Ski Resort, Whetstone Gulf State Park, Frank E Jadwin Memorial State Forest, and Tug Hill State Forest.

Jefferson. Boldt Castle is located in the Thousand Islands region. Just Room Enough Island is unique tiny island location with a small house and beach. Carleton Villa is an abandoned mansion on Carleton Island. Wellesley Island State Park, Southwick Beach State Park, Antique Boat Museum, Dry Hill Ski Area, and Tibbetts Point Lighthouse.

Hamilton. Film locations include Adirondack Park, Great Camp Sagamore, and Buttermilk Falls.

Essex. Locations include Lake Placid Winter Olympic venues, Whiteface Mountain, Fort Ticonderoga, Ausable Chasm, and High Falls Gorge.

Clinton. Film locations include Lake Champlain, Cumberland Bay State Park, and Point Au Roche State Park.

Franklin. The Point is a boutique hotel in Saranac Lake.

Southern Tier

Southern Tier includes the counties of Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Tioga, Chenango, Broome, and Delaware.

Steuben. Corning is home to the The Rockwell Museum, and Corning Museum of Glass. Other locations include Stony Brook State Park, and Glenn H. Curtiss Museum.

Schuyler. Film locations include Watkins Glen State Park, Shequaga Falls Park, and Watkins Glen International automobile race track.

Chemung. Locations include the National Soaring Museum, Chemung Valley History Museum, Newtown Battlefield State Park, and Mount Saviour Monastery.

Tompkins. Ithaca is home to Cornell University campus, A. D. White Library, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art designed by I. M. Pei, Cornell Botanic Gardens, Museum of the Earth, Ithaca Falls, Triphammer Falls, and Ithaca Commons. Other locations include Taughannock Falls, Buttermilk Falls State Park, Robert H. Treman State Park, and Newfield Covered Bridge.

Tioga. Film locations include Oakley Corners State Forest, Waverly Glen Park, and Shindagin Hollow State Forest.

Chenango. Locations include Bowman Lake State Park, Wolf Mountain Nature Center, Charles E Baker State Forest, and Long Pond State Forest.

Broome. Binghamton’s Historic District has several interesting buildings including the Perry Building, Roberson Mansion, Phelps Mansion, Broome County Courthouse, Former City Hall, Beth David synagogue, Binghamton University campus, and New York State Inebriate Asylum. Kopernik Observatory & Science Center is also located in Broome county.

Delaware. Film locations include the Delaware and Ulster Heritage Railroad, Downsville Covered Bridge, Hamden Covered Bridge, and Fitches Covered Bridge.

Central New York

Central New York includes the counties of Cortland, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oswego, and Madison.

Cortland. Locations include Greek Peak ski resort, and Morgan Hill State Forest.

Cayuga. Film locations include Auburn Correctional Facility, Fillmore Glen State Park, Fair Haven Beach State Park, and Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge.

Onondaga. Syracuse is known for Clinton Square, Niagara Mohawk Building, Everson Museum of Art designed by I. M. Pei, Landmark Theatre, and Museum of Science & Technology.

Oswego. Locations include Fort Ontario, Salmon River Falls, Richardson-Bates House, West Pierhead Lighthouse, and Oswego Speedway. Nine Mile Point is a nuclear power station located in Scriba.

Madison. Chittenango Falls State Park is located in this county.

Finger Lakes

The Finger Lakes region includes the counties of Orleans, Genesee, Wyoming, Monroe, Livingston, Wayne, Ontario, Yates, and Seneca.

Orleans. Film locations include Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, Lakeside Beach State Park, and Medina Falls.

Genesee. Locations include Darien Lakes State Park, Six Flags Darien Lake, and Rolling Hills Asylum.

Wyoming. Letchworth State Park is known for its waterfalls and Genesee Arch Bridge. The Biggest Loser Resort Niagara is a weight loss resort. Arcade & Attica Railroad is a shortline railroad that hauls freight between Arcade and North Java.

Monroe. The city of Rochester is known for The Strong Museum, George Eastman Museum, Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester Museum & Science Center, Times Square Building, The Powers Building, University of Rochester, Seabreeze Amusement Park, Ontario Beach Park, High Falls, and Highland Botanical Park. Genesee Country Village and Museum is located in Wheatland.

Livingston. Letchworth State Park is known for its waterfalls and Genesee Arch Bridge.

Wayne. Chimney Bluffs State Park is located in this county.

Ontario. Film locations of note include Bristol Mountain ski resort, Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Park, and Granger Homestead and Carriage Museum. Hill Cumorah is where Joseph Smith is said to have found the golden plates which he translated into the Book of Mormon.

Yates. The county is known for its vineyards and Seneca Mills Falls.

Seneca. Locations include Finger Lakes National Forest, Seneca Lake, and Cayuga Lake.

Western New York

Western New York includes the counties of Niagara, Erie, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Allegany.

Niagara. Film locations include Niagara Falls, Fort Niagara, Niagara Arts & Cultural Center, Whirlpool State Park, Golden Hill State Park, Lockport Cave, Lewiston-Queenston Bridge, Whirlpool Rapids Bridge, Olcott Beach Carousel Park, Our Lady of Fatima Shrine, Schoellkopf Power Station, and Niagara Falls Underground Railroad Heritage Center. Robert Moses Niagara Hydroelectric Power Station is a hydroelectric power station located in Lewiston.

Erie. Buffalo is New York’s second largest city. It is best known for its architecture such as the Art Deco style Buffalo City Hall, Albright Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo History Museum, Buffalo Savings Bank, Electric Tower, Guaranty Building, Liberty Building, Richardson Olmsted Complex, Buffalo Central Terminal, Old County Hall, St. Paul’s Cathedral, Kleinhans Music Hall, Shea’s Performing Arts Center, Connecticut Street Armory, Silo City, Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens, Roycroft Campus, and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Darwin D. Martin House, and Graycliff. Other Buffalo film locations include Peace Bridge, Forest Lawn Cemetery, Glen Park, Buffalo Lighthouse Park, Buffalo Psychiatric Center, and Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park. One M&T Plaza was designed by Minoru Yamasaki.

Chautauqua. The county is best known for its charming small towns, vineyards, verdant Amish farmland, as well as the Chautauqua Institution, National Comedy Center, and Dunkirk Lighthouse. Lily Dale is a hamlet connected with the Spiritualist movement.

Cattaraugus. Film locations of note include Holiday Valley ski resort in Ellicottville, Allegany State Park, Basilica of St Mary of the Angels, and Pumpkinville.

Allegany. Locations of note include Swain Resort, and Wiscoy Falls.

New York Film Location Permits

When filming in New York City, a permit is not required if filming does not assert exclusive use of city property. This includes small footprint hand-held camera or tripod shoots. A certificate of insurance is not required.

A permit is required for shoots that assert exclusive use of city property. This includes shoots with larger equipment setups (ie: anything more than hand-held camera, camera on tripod or hand-held items such as bounce-boards or boom mics). A permit is also required for shoots involving firearms or pyrotechnics, stunts, prop vehicles, actors in police uniform, and production vehicle parking privileges. A certificate of insurance and $300 application fee is required.

Permission to film in the rest of the state is organized with local authorities.

When To Shoot?

New York has a four-season climate with spring in full bloom, hot humid summers, colorful fall leaves, and cold snowy winters. The winters are colder farther north and summers are cooler in the mountains and on the coast.
