West Virginia Film Locations
Despite the stereotypes of West Virginia being a state of run down towns and destroyed natural locations, the state is actually full of beautiful green landscapes and impressive architecture.
West Virginia locations of interest include Appalachian Mountains, Monongahela National Forest, Blackwater Falls State Park, small towns nestled in forested hills such as the picturesque Harpers Ferry, rivers, waterfalls, gorges, covered bridges and apple orchards. The state also offers interesting industrial looks such as railroads, highways, bridges, abandoned coal mines, prisons and factories.
Small coal town film locations of note include Hinton, Lewisburg, Buckhannon, Elkins, Shepherdstown, Thomas, Davis, Thurmond, and Logan.
From south to north… The Greenbrier is a luxury resort located in the Allegheny Mountains. Nuttallburg Headhouse has a defunct rusting coal conveyor. Prince has an old-style Amtrak station. Green Bank observatory has a large satellite dish available for film shoots (note the area has no cell, internet, radio, or TV service). Cass Scenic Railroad State Park has a steam train available for filming. New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville is an impressive location. The State Capitol building in Charleston can double for the White House. John Amos Powerplant is located in Winfield on the Kanawha River. In November Gauley River offers river control allowing a choice of filming raging whitewater or calm water.
Wheeling is a beautiful rust-belt city in the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia. West Virginia State Penitentiary is a defunct gothic-style prison located in Moundsville. The Palace of Gold temple can double for a temple in India.
West Virginia has hosted films such as The Deer Hunter, The Silence of the Lambs (1991), Super Size Me, and the TV series Castle Rock.
