Located on the banks of the Ohio River in northern West Virginia, Wheeling is a city known for its rich architectural heritage and rust-belt locations.
Locations of note include the Wheeling Suspension Bridge, Centre Market, Waterfront Amphitheater, Capitol Theatre, Victoria Theatre, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Passenger Station, Cathedral of Saint Joseph, Blue Church, WesBanco Arena, West Virginia Independence Hall, Heritage Port, Oglebay Park, Wheeling Catholic Elementary School, Old Stone windmill pub, rows of historic homes, abandoned and restored industrial and warehouse locations, and a skatepark. The Richardson Doyle Building, built in 1820, is a beautiful historic building that comes with double walled fortified bank safes. 44 16th Street is an interesting office building built in 1962. Both are for sale and open to filming projects. The gothic West Virginia State Penitentiary is located a 15min drive away.
Wheeling has a four-season climate. Spring is mild. Summers are hot and humid. Autumn has colourful leaves falling. Winters are cold and sometimes snow-covered.
Pittsburgh is the closest major airport, a 1 hour drive away from Wheeling. Pittsburgh is also the closest city where film crew and equipment are based.
Filmmakers will find a wealth of unique, undiscovered locations. Producers will find an inexpensive city that is open for business, and prepared to assist visiting film and photography shoots with location and other support. Although West Virginia does not currently offer a film tax incentive program, the city is very open to assisting visiting productions on a case by case basis.
