Wyoming Film Locations
The Rocky Mountain Cowboy State is alive with the spirit of the Wild West with its rugged landscapes and breathtaking mountains, rivers, lakes, geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, forests, canyons, desert, vast plains, and otherworldly locations.
Agricultural film locations include cattle ranches, sheep farms, and fields of wheat, corn, barley, and oats. Wyoming has oil and natural gas extraction facilities. Energy locations include coal-fired power plants, wind farms, and hydroelectric dams.
Wyoming has hosted productions including Wind River (2017), Django Unchained (2012), Brokeback Mountain (2005), Starship Troopers (1997), Dances With Wolves (1990), and Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977).
Yellowstone National Park is one of the world’s most spectacular parks. Locations of note include Old Faithful, Old Faithful Inn, Grand Prismatic Spring, Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone Lake, Yellowstone Canyon, Yellowstone Falls, Gibbon Falls, Mystic Falls, West Thumb Geyser Basin, and Norris Geyser Basin. The Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley are popular locations to photograph bison. Boiling River Hot Springs is a natural hot spring that flows into a cold river. The Grizzly and Wolf Discovery Center is located just outside of the park in West Yellowstone.
Grand Teton National Park is another spectacular location of mountains, forests, lakes, rivers, and waterfalls. The park offers some of the world’s most spectacular day treks. T. A. Moulton Barn is a picturesque barn within the Mormon Row Historic District. Brokeback Mountain (2005) partly filmed in Grand Teton National Park.
John D. Rockefeller Jr. Memorial Parkway is a scenic road that connects Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park.
The Wind River Range is a mountain range known for craggy mountain peaks, glaciers, spruce and fir forests, lakes, and lush meadows. The range includes the Bridger-Teton National Forest, and Shoshone National Forest. The Cirque of the Towers is a popular rock climbing destination. Wind River (2017) filmed in Wind River Indian Reservation.
Devils Tower National Monument is an otherworldly 1,267 feet (386 m) butte that featured in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977).
Hot Springs State Park, located in Location Thermopolis, is known for its hot springs.
Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area is known for its ranches and wild horses.
Jackson is a town in the Jackson Hole valley best known for the ski resorts of Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Snow King, and Grand Targhee Resort. Other Jackson film locations of note include the National Elk Refuge, National Museum of Wildlife Art, and the spectacular Jackson Hole Airport. Django Unchained (2012), and Dances With Wolves (1990) filmed in Jackson Hole.
Cheyenne is the largest city and state capital. Locations of note include Wyoming State Capitol building, Wyoming Governor’s Mansion, Cheyenne Depot Museum, Wyoming State Museum, Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum, and Cheyenne Botanic Gardens. Quebec 01 Missile Alert Facility State Historic Site, and Francis E. Warren Air Force Base is located outside of Cheyenne.
Laramie is known for University of Wyoming campus, and Wyoming Territorial Prison State Historic Site. Curt Gowdy State Park, and Vedauwoo rock climbing area are located near Laramie.
Cody is known for Buffalo Bill Center of the West, Old Trail Town, and Buffalo Bill State Park.
Casper is known for the National Historic Trails Interpretive Center, Fort Caspar Museum, and Hogadon Basin Ski Area.
Lander is the headquarters of the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Sinks Canyon State Park is located just outside of Lander.
Starship Troopers (1997) filmed in Powder River.
Flaming Gorge Reservoir is home to Flaming Gorge Dam.

Wyoming Film Location Permits
There are no state-wide permits. Permits are required for filming on federal and state lands. Filming on Indian Reservations requires the permission of tribal authorities. Proof of insurance is required. Please contact us for location specific information.
When To Shoot?
Wyoming has a dry and windy climate. Snow on the mountains can be found from December to April. Summers are mild.
Events of interest to filmmakers and photographers include:
