Filming in Rome: Permits, Fixers, Production Services

Written on February 27, 2014

Rome

Rome is one of the world’s best known cities and home to many iconic film locations including, amongst others, the Colosseum, Roman Forum, Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Castel Sant’Angelo, Galleria Borghese, Spanish Steps, Victor Emanuel Monument, catacombs, Roman piazzas (Barberini, Navona, Venezia,
del Popolo,di Spagna), Roman villas and the Vatican City.

Rome has been the backdrop for many great films by renowned Italian directors such as Fellini, Pasolini and Antonioni. Rome has also hosted international productions such as The Talented Mr. Ripley and Roman Holiday.

Film Permits

Location Permits are required for each exterior location filmed in Rome. The process generally takes about 2 weeks. If you are looking to film several Roman locations our fixer is able to offer a comprehensive plan to ensure a hassle free experience at minimal cost. For interiors each location has different rules. As an example, exclusive filming of the Colosseum is possible outside of public viewing times however only limited equipment is permitted on location. The location fee is generally around 3000 Euros per day but as is the case with most things in Italy, this is negotiable. A TVC will be charged more than a documentary.

When to Shoot?

Rome is one of the world’s most visited cities. The high tourist season runs from June to August. Romans take summer holidays in August so many services and sites close or operate limited schedules during that month. March to April Lent / Easter season is busy with religious visitors and events as is December for Chirstmas celebrations. The best months to shoot are from April to June and September to October.

Crew & Equipment

Rome has a good depth of English speaking, experienced crews including directors, DoP’s, videographers and stills photographers.

All standard camera, lighting and grip equipment is available locally.
