El Árbol del Tule (the Tree of Tule) is located in the town center of Santa María del Tule, a short drive east of Oaxaca City, Mexico.

A Montezuma Cypress tree, its circumference measures 14.05 m (46.1 ft), making it the stoutest trunk of any tree in the world. The tree is comparatively short at a height of 35.4 m (116 ft).

Originally thought to be several trees, DNA tests have found that it is in fact one tree. The sheer scale of the tree is emphasised by the tiny size of each individual leaf needle, of which the tree has millions.

Most estimates put the tree at around 1,600 years old, which is believed to be as old as the nearby Zapotec religious site of Mitla. Montezuma Cypress trees were commonly used by local peoples for building and medicinal purposes.

Although the Tule Tree is still growing, reports are that it is also slowly dying due to its roots being damaged by water shortages, pollution, and traffic.
